How much bitcoin is in the Lightning Network?

The amount of bitcoin stored on the Lightning Network has jumped by two-thirds over the past year to hit an all-time high of 5,580 coin, according to crypto data firm The Block. Crypto payment specialists have also seen strong volumes. US-based BitPay said transaction volumes jumped 18 per cent last year versus 2021.

Proposed in a white paper in 2016, the Lightning Network (LN) is a layer-2 solution built on top of Bitcoin. LN was created in response to scalability issues with Bitcoin, namely the speed and cost of Bitcoin transactions. Bitcoin’s current theoretical maximum transactions per second (TPS) is 10, though in reality it is between 3 and 7.

Will Lightning payments be able to work in Africa?

A peer-to-peer Bitcoin exchange called Paxful, which processes millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin transactions in emerging markets and claims to have 1.5 million users in Africa alone, also recently announced it will enable Lightning payments. This integration could enable fast and cheap Bitcoin payments for millions of users.
